Maxwell Davidson Gallery is proud to present a new solo exhibition by acclaimed painter Sanford Wurmfeld titled Grey Series. Throughout his nearly 50-year career as a painter , Wurmfeld has worked with specifically selected color value, hue, and saturation relationships. In the process of testing his ideas as they evolve, he has frequently used closely related colors of grey in particular paintings.

In 2014, Wurmfeld was commissioned by the Allentown Art Museum to create a painting in response to a Canaletto work in their Kress Collection. Grey Series arises from that response, and is unlike any work done in Wurmfeld’s career to date, exhibiting a varied elusive and amorphous haze of colored light drifting in space.

Intrinsic to Wurmfeld’s method is an unusually shifting grid-like structure to carry the color. The clarity and concreteness of the facture is in counterpoint to the ephemeral and meditative experience to be had by the viewer - the viewer who actively engages with the work.

This is Wurmfeld’s first show with Maxwell Davidson Gallery. His last exhibitions in New York were in 2013, when the retrospective exhibition Color Visions 1966 – 2013 was the final show at CUNY’s Hunter College Times Square Gallery, and simultaneously his newer Light and Dark Paintings  were shown at Minus Space. His work is in public, private, and corporate collections around the world, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Guggenheim, the Brooklyn Museum, Espace de l’Art Concret,  Karl Ernst Osthaus-Museum, and the MACBA in Buenos Aires.
