New York, NY, September 16, 2011 — Maxwell Davidson Gallery is pleased to present Racing, an exhibition featuring new work by Christopher Brown, and the artist’s first with Maxwell Davidson Gallery. This new body of work is a series of paintings that portray multi-figured images of bicycle, running, and horse races, and explore the relationships between scale, color, movement, and light.
The paintings range in size from intimate – 10” x 20" – to large-scale – 80" x 80" – and feature juxtapositions of detailed figurative imagery with broad landscape panoramas to create striking visual compositions. Brown’s work is at once realistic and painterly, and his new paintings are typical of the artist's previous work in their photographic references, inventive style, and richly, textured surfaces. However, these new works, especially Brown’s larger pieces, also reveal new levels of complexity and represent an area of exploration that is unique for the artist.
Christopher Brown has had solo exhibitions in galleries and museums across the country. His work is in public collections including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Berkeley Art Museum, SFMoMA, and the New York Public Library. Brown received his MFA at UC Davis; he lives and works in Oakland.
